National Police Week

National Police Week 2013
National Police Week 2013

Each year, National Police Week centers on May 15th.  It is a time to honor Law Enforcement officers who have paid the ultimate price.

May 15th (regardless of what day it falls on) is Peace Officers Memorial Day.  In 1962, President JFK signed it into existence.  And every year, on that day, a Memorial Service is held to remember fallen officers.

Then, the whole week surrounding May 15th is declared to be National Police Week.  This year it runs May 12-18, 2013.  National Police Week has now developed into a series of events in Washington DC which attracts tens of thousands of Law Enforcement officers.

The primary sponsors of these events include the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF), the Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS) and the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP).

We also want to honor the heroism of Law Enforcement officers.  So Public Safety Stores is offering a 20% discount on all Law Enforcement orders during this week.

We THANK YOU for your service!

Bird Flu: Update

as of April 29, 2013

Last month we told you about the H7N9 (Bird Flu) outbreak in China.  At that time there were 5 reported deaths and 11 total cases.  That was April 4th.

One month later, there are now reports of 27 deaths and 127 people infected.

Experts also predict this H7N9 (Bird Flu) will appear in Europe and other countries.  Which leads scientists to say this new Bird Flu poses a "serious threat."

We hope this will be fully contained.  But given our experience in 2009 - when the Swine Flu epidemic wiped out our stock of Respirators - we are seeking to plan ahead and keep you informed.

Our current stock of N95 Face Masks and other Respirators is strong.  We plan to stay well-stocked in case this Bird Flu gets out of hand.

But as is the case with all things Safety-related, we encourage you to think ahead about your own stock!

Let us know of any questions (even re: volume discounts) by calling Public Safety Stores at 888-707-3195.

Hurricane Season Might Be Big

Hurricane Season starts in less than a month - on June 1st.  We have talked about this because analysts say this year may be highly active.

Here is some "unofficial" (but interesting) news we have to report!

Last week I was in Florida for meetings, prior to the FDIC Show.  I had a chance to swim in the Gulf of Mexico.  My first time ever!  But the water was crazy warm.  In fact, it was 80 degrees.  In April!

I'm from California and this seemed unusual.  So I asked the locals about the warm water.  They said they are very concerned because 80 degrees is far too warm this early in the year.

They also said hurricanes are "the earth's air conditioning system."  I had not heard this before, but they explained the earth moves heat from one place to another by using large, powerful cyclones - hurricanes.  Therefore, if the air and water become too warm in the Atlantic and Gulf area, hurricanes may be created to move out this heat.

Unofficial reporting, yes.  But certainly worth noting.

We all know the damage hurricanes can cause.  Witness Hurricane Sandy (2012).  Over 60 million people were impacted in the Northeast and over 8 million people were left with power.  The First Responders were heroic.  But the total devastation was staggering.

If you live in the Southeast, you remember Katrina (2005) and others.  Just consider your own Hurricane Preparedness this year and encourage someone else to do the same!

No one plans to fail.  They fail to plan.
